The Seth Ramdas Shah Memorial hospital and research centre (SRSMH&RC) here, along with Cordlife Biotech and Nischi-In center for regenerative medicines (NCRM), Chennai, started stem cell therapy in the city on Wednesday.

“SRSMH&RC is the first hospital in the state to actively initiate cell based therapy,” said Vikram Chavan, managing trustee.
“The therapy would benefit patients suffering from incurable degenerative diseases like cirrhosis, spinal injury and specific neuro diseases, diabetic foot ulcer and ischemic heart diseases,” said Chaitanya Purandare, managing director of Cordlife Biotech. The concept of stemcell-based therapy is an established and proven one in India. More than 15 hospitals in Tamil Nadu and Kerala offer this treatment to patients suffering from incurable degenerative diseases.
“The technology uses a person’s bone marrow stem cells (autologous). The natural property of stem cells help in regeneration of tissues. Since patient’s own cells are used, there is no chance of rejection and, therefore, no known risks,” Purandare added.
