Chennai 17 Aug 2011. The year 2011 having been designated as the International Year of Chemistry, in Chennai it will be commemorated by a lecture by eminent Nano-biotechnologist from Japan Dr Haraguchi on the 15th October 2011, under the banner of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), a partnership mission by the UNESCO and IUPAC (International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry) http://www.chemistry2011.org/

The United Nations Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated the year 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry after the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations in 2008, adopting a resolution on the same. The UNESCO has partnered with the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and has floated the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. Under the unifying theme “Chemistry—our life, our future,” IYC 2011 will offer a range of interactive, entertaining, and educational activities for all ages. The Year of Chemistry is intended to reach across the globe, with opportunities for public participation at the local, regional, and national level.

One such activity to be held in Chennai under the IYC banner is a commemorative lecture by Eminent Nano-biotechnologist Dr Kazutoshi Haraguchi, who is the Director of Kawamura Institute of Chemical Research, Chiba, Japan. Dr Haraguchi has developed numerous bio mimicking nanomaterials including scaffolds for skin - tissue engineering and corneal regeneration. Dr Haraguchi is a lead investigator of several peer reviewed publications in nano-biotechnology and has many patents to his credit. He will deliver his talk as a part of the NCRM NICHE 2011 to be held at Chennai on the 15th October 2011 at Hotel Savera between 0930-1230 Hrs and will emphasize on how much the research in basic and applied chemistry has contributed to the developments in life sciences, especially in regenerative medicine.

Prof. Sampath Kumar, of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and Vice-President of the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India) who will chair the session said that “The mysteries of Che-Mystery, when unraveled its more than a treasure hunt for biologists and clinicians” and added that this lecture by someone who has done lot of translational work to bring to the clinical applications several chemically synthesized bio mimicking scaffolds will be a great inspiration to UG, PG and doctoral students and scientists in chemistry, biology and biotechnology.
